DIY Curl Gel with Just Two Ingredients
Simple, Natural, and Effective: How to Make Flaxseed Hair Gel for Curly Hair
Many of us who embrace natural health are already mindful of what we eat, how we move, and what we put on our skin. But what about our hair?
If you’ve ever looked at the ingredients on a bottle of store-bought hair gel, you’ll notice a long list of chemicals and synthetic fragrances. While we often focus on what goes into our bodies, it’s just as important to consider what comes into regular contact with them. Hair products are no exception.
For those with curly or textured hair, the right hair gel can make a big difference. But that doesn’t mean you need a shelf full of products filled with artificial ingredients. There is a simple, safe, and surprisingly effective option you can make at home using just flaxseeds and water.
Why Make Your Own Hair Gel?
From a holistic perspective, every choice we make can either support or disrupt the body’s natural balance. Hair products, even if not absorbed directly into the bloodstream, can still affect us through contact with our skin and through scent, especially while we sleep.
Commercial hair gels contain hormone-disrupting fragrances, drying alcohols, and chemical preservatives. It is worth avoiding these exposures when possible.
Making your own hair gel gives you full control over what you're using. It also gives your hair what it actually needs to stay healthy and defined, without coating it in synthetic ingredients.
Flaxseed Hair Gel Recipe
Yields: About 4 oz
Ingredients:
1 Cup filtered water
2 Tablespoons whole flaxseeds
A few drops of essential oil (optional, for scent)
A few drops of aloe vera gel (optional, for added moisture)
Instructions:
Boil the Water
In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of filtered water to a gentle boil.Add Flaxseeds
Stir in the flaxseeds. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.Tip: Do not simmer longer than 10 minutes or the gel will become too thick to strain.
Strain and Cool
Once the mixture thickens to a gel-like consistency, remove from heat and strain immediately using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Let it cool completely.Add Optional Ingredients
Once cool, mix in a few drops of essential oil such as lavender or rosemary. You can also add a small amount of aloe vera gel if desired.Store and Use
Pour the gel into a clean, airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. Use within two weeks.
How to Use:
Apply a small amount of the gel to wet hair, scrunching or smoothing as needed to define curls. Let hair air-dry or diffuse as usual.
A Few Notes:
This gel does not contain preservatives, so refrigeration is important.
You can experiment with the simmer time and water/flax ratio to adjust the thickness of the gel.
Some people choose to freeze portions in ice cube trays for later use. Texture may change slightly after thawing, but it generally holds up well.
